If you can’t file your taxes on time, there’s an IRS form you can file to get extra time. It’s called Form 4868 and it’s called the IRS Extension Form. The form is free to obtain and free to file. Taxpayers can file electronically or use the paper version and it’s just a one page form that takes about two minutes to fill out.
To file the IRS Extension Form, go to the IRS website and download the PDF. Print it out and mail it to the appropriate IRS office according to what state you live in. There are addresses on the form instructions that come with the download.
If you want acknowledgement that the IRS received your IRS Extension Form, the file it electronically instead of using the paper form. To do this, you will either have to go through a tax preparation service or use tax preparation software. There is no way to do it independently through your computer without using tax prep software.
The IRS Extension Form will give you six months beyond the April 15 deadline to file your federal income taxes. However, if you owe the IRS money on your taxes, that is still due by April 15. If you expect to owe money then you will have to pay by April 15.
Estimate how much money you will owe the IRS and send payment with your IRS Extension Form. You can pay by credit card, Debit Card, or EFTPS. This can be done over the phone or over the internet.
